Angels and Demons

If I could save any book in the world for future generations I would choose the book Angels and Demons. I would choose this book because I believe that this book is a great thriller and mystery book. Angels and Demons is about a man named Robert Langdon who is a Harvard symbologist. Throughout the book Langdon gets thrown into a situation where he has to help other scientists try to stop the Illuminati from destroying Vatican City. There are different mysteries that Langdon has to help the other scientists solve throughout the book in order to figure out who is responsible for trying to destroy Vatican City. The book ends with a twisted thrill that the reader would have never guessed for the ending. I enjoy this book so much because there is never a dull moment during this book. Each chapter ends and begins with a new and exciting part of the story. The book also has interesting information that helps to keep the reader interested in the book as well. I have never enjoyed reading a book as much as I enjoyed reading Angels and Demons. I believe even if people do not enjoy reading, that they would actually enjoy reading this book.

Halloween!!

When I was younger, Halloween was something that I looked forward to every fall. I loved going to the stores and picking out new Halloween costumes and dressing up. When I was little my mom and dad would take me and my brothers around to all of the neighbor’s houses and my aunts and uncles. As I grew older, my mom would take me and my friends around to visit our other classmate’s houses. Once we learned to drive our friends would all get together and we would drive ourselves and still visit other people’s houses. These were some of the most fun memories because it was always fun to drive around and visit houses and not talk or even laugh until whoever was guessing your name got your name right. I also always looked forward to other kids coming and visiting our house. I thought it was always fun and challenging to try to guess the person’s name.
In our small town, there was always a church Halloween party that we would go to on the closest Sunday to Halloween. At the church party there were games and different activities that the children could do to win Halloween candy and small prizes. Before we would play these games and everything the kids would all walk around our town with their friends or parents and visit all of the people who lived in town. Halloween was something that I enjoyed dressing up for my whole childhood, and I still enjoy dressing up in fun costumes and seeing all of my friends dressed in different outfits.

Changing Wright State

If I could change Wright State, I think the only thing that I would like to change is how students need to take a UVC class or a freshman seminar. This is one class that I do not overly enjoy, simply because I feel like this class treats freshman like they are young children. While I am in the UVC class I feel that they are teaching us information that we have learned a long time ago. Because of this, I feel that the class is very boring and moves very slowly. I like the idea that the class is supposed to help the students to get to know each other. That is one of the positive things about this class. I have met many new people and talk to some of these people even outside of the classroom. I think that if the material learned in the class was changed and was made a little more interesting this class would be awesome.
Other than the UVC class, Wright State is everything that I had hoped it would be. I love the atmosphere of the college and all of the teachers are very friendly and helpful. There are so many different sources that you can go to if you ever need help with something as well. I also really like how Wright State has tunnels, so in the winter or during raining weather they are very helpful. I am very glad that I chose Wright State University, and I would recommend this school to any of the students still in high school.

Revision Process

I like writing drafts and then having either a student or the teacher go over what I have written to give me advice over the paper. I feel that sometimes my original drafts are not as well put together as they could be, simply because at times I find it hard to think of something to write about. The revisions I usually make to my papers I believe help make the paper better, but I still like to have other people’s opinions other than just my own. Getting other people to revise my paper I believe they sometimes come up with ideas or ways to write something that I would have never thought of. In high school we would have one conference with our teacher for each paper that we were assigned to write. She would give us advice and how to make changes that would better our paper. She would just give us advice, however, and not actually tell what was all needed to make the paper an “A” paper. I believe that this worked very well. I like how we have the students revise our papers, but sometimes other students advice isn’t the best advice. I do think that having other students revise my paper is helping me to become a better writer. I also think it helps to revise other student’s papers because you can sometimes get different ideas on how to better your writing. The instructor’s comments are clear and easy to understand. If for some reason they aren’t clear, the instructor never has a problem answering the student’s questions. Overall, I think that the revision process is working very well, and hopefully helps to better my writing skills.

"In Bed, the Kiss"

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
I chose the painting called “In Bed, the Kiss.” In this painting it is clear that neither the man nor the woman have their shirts on. Because of this it makes it obvious that the couple is doing more than just kissing. The purpose of this painting is to show two people either in love or maybe in lust. The audience would be young adults on up. Younger children would not really understand this type of painting. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec also may have painted this picture because he could have been thinking of his girlfriend or wife at the time he decided to paint it. I also noticed while looking for a picture to analyze that Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec had several paintings of men and women in bed together. He also had a lot of paintings of social events where people were dancing and enjoying themselves. By looking at these other paintings, I also came to the conclusion that Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec liked to paint pictures of how people lived back in the 1800’s. I believe that his stance on painting this picture was the honest fact that people do sleep around. Whether this couple in bed is married or not, people back in the 1800’s slept with each other as do many people today. By using shades of darker blues and grays for the bed sheets, someone could also conclude that this couple is sleeping together at night. Going back to the paintings of the social events, this could be an after result of one of the paintings with the couples dancing and having fun.

Life without Television

It seems today that having a television in one’s home is a necessity. When I was growing up, we had two TV’s: one in our living room, and one in my parents’ bedroom. We were only allowed to watch TV in the summertime during the morning, and after that we had to go play outside or find another way to entertain ourselves. Today there are children with TV’s in their bedrooms. I have babysat for four different families and their kids have TV’s in their bedrooms. I don’t think that watching television is all bad, but when kids start to get addicted to it there needs to be a change.
I don’t believe that by not having television it would make more independent human beings. I don’t really see the connection between watching television and being less independent.
If children wouldn’t have a television to watch I do believe that they would grow up to be healthier. If children would not have a television to watch tv shows or to play video games on they would be forced to find something else to entertain them. Their entertainment would most likely result in playing outside doing a physical activity, or they would find another fun activity to become involved in.
A world without television is very hard to imagine. I believe that television can benefit and not benefit children in life. When it comes to being more educated I do not agree that technically children would be more educated without television. Today there are programs on TV that are made to help children learn without them being conscious of it. Dora the Explorer, is a good example of a kids television show that helps to educate children. Throughout Dora the Explorer, Dora uses some Spanish words while she talks. After she says the word she explains what the word means. Then she asks the children who are watching the show to say the word with her. This is helping young children learn some Spanish words at a young age. There are many children television shows today that are helping children learn while watching them. Team Umizoomi is also a television show on Nick Jr. that is a math-based show for preschoolers. In this show, the characters help solve problems and use shapes and colors while doing so. It helps children to learn their shapes and colors while having fun. Because of shows like this, I believe that children can actually benefit from watching television at a young age. Once a child gets older and needs to start doing homework and wants to watch television instead, then I believe that television could be a problem.
I believe that having a television could benefit children in some ways, but more often than not it is more hurting them than it is helping them.

The Power of Advertising

Whether we realize it or not, today’s society is greatly influenced by the advertising world. I feel that some of the ads that advertisers present to the public are unnecessary. The ads I feel that are mainly unnecessary are the ads that have the models in them, hoping that by having pretty girls it will benefit their product. Whether the ad is using these models to help them try to sell dieting pills, or if they’re using these models just to catch a guy’s attention, I believe that both are not needed.
I believe that by having these models all over the media today is showing girls how they are expected to look even though most of these models have had touch ups done on computers to help them look more appealing. I think that by having these types of women in advertisements, they are telling girls at a young age how they are expected to look. Because most people will never look like these models, I think it is giving girls of all ages false hopes.
False hopes like these could lead to many problems in a girl’s life. Not having the “ideal American female body” could lead to girls becoming depressed, anorexic, bulimic, and other dangerous health problems. These false hopes could also be a problem for men because men also see how these women in advertisements look and want their girl friend or future wife to obtain this similar body frame.
I believe that many advertisements today have negative impacts on the way our society views themselves and each other. If advertisers would stop having these kinds of advertisements would the world be a place with higher self-esteems and more optimistic people? I believe the answer is yes.

Wright State has always been a college that I really wanted to go to. When I considered the other colleges, I didn’t find any that best suited what I wanted like Wright State did. I am from a very small town, and I didn’t want to go to a college that was right in the middle of a city or anywhere that was too big.
When I went on my college visit to Wright State and saw that there was open grass along with space, I felt like this was a place that I could attend college at and still feel like I was somewhat at home. Wright State is not a huge college, and its atmosphere is exactly what I wanted.
Another factor that played a role in my decision to come to Wright State is that Wright State is an hour away from everything I consider to be essential in my life. My home town and family is an hour north of Wright State, and my brother is an hour east of it. Knowing I could visit either of them and only have to drive an hour really seemed like a win-win situation to me.
Wright State also has a very good education program, which is what I have decided to major in. Currently, I am trying to apply to the Middle Childhood and Intervention Specialist program that allows students to do a dual major and earn their degree in four years. There have been several teachers who taught at my high school who received their degrees from Wright State and highly suggested that I should attend school here.
So far Wright State has been everything that I was hoping it to be. I have only been here for three weeks and I already feel like I am at home. I am happy with my decision about attending Wright State and I am looking forward to the rest of this school year and the previous years to come.

"Man in the Mirror"

"Man in the Mirror" is one song that I believe has a very strong meaning behind it. The song is talking about changing the world for the better of citizens. I find this song to have a very significant meaning because if everyone would stop being so concerned about their own lives and take the time to help each other I think that the world would be a better place. I particularly enjoy this song because I like the meaning behind it and it is also a very fun song to dance and sing to. The purpose of this song is to get the listeners to hear the meaning and think about what Michael Jackson is saying. Michael Jackson is trying to get the listeners to help make the world a better place, along with him by making a change. The audience this song is targeting at would be anyone who believes that he or she has the power to make a change in the world. This audience would mainly be teenagers on up who know how to voice their opinions. The genre of this is written as a song. I believe by Michael Jackson singing this as a song it could be more effective because more people tend to listen to music than to read newspapers or magazines. A song is also easier to catch people’s attentions. Michael Jackson’s stance about this song seems very concerned and willing to make a change to try to better the world. Michael Jackson is using multiple medias to help him voice his opinion. He is using the radio, CDs, the TV, and even the computer.

Remember Me

“Whatever you do in life is insignificant, but it’s very important that you do it anyways.” This is the quote that Tyler, from the movie, Remember Me, says frequently throughout his movie.  In the movie, Remember Me, Robert Pattinson plays the main male character named Tyler Hawkins. Tyler has come from a hard past that makes him shut people out in his life and refuses to let people in. Emilie de Ravin plays the female character, Ally Craig. She too, has had a very hard childhood life starting the day she witnessed her mother’s murder. Tyler is very rebellious and feels as if he is alone in the world lost with his feelings until one day he met Ally. Ally had given him a brighter outlook on life and they both shared very similar feelings with each other. The two end up falling in love, and Tyler is beginning to be much happier with his life. During the climax of the movie, some secrets are revealed that about tears the couple apart, which initially had brought them together. The theme of the movie is to show people the power of one’s love for another, and also to live every day to the fullest. Throughout the movie Tyler is also very close with his younger sister, which gives another theme that the power of family is very important in a person’s life. This movie is filled with multiple thrills and has a very unsuspected ending. I believe that this movie is one of the better movies I had ever seen, and I believe that after watching it, others would have to agree.
